Stephen Cassivi studied in Political Science as well as Biology before receiving his Doctorate in Medicine with Magna cum Laude honors from the University of Ottawa where he was elected President of his Medical School class. Following medical school, he completed his General Surgery residency at t he University of Toronto, Canada and was certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He also obtained certification from the American Board of Surgery. He completed a subspecialty fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and is further certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Cassivi has also been honoured by the Royal
College of Surgeons of England with a fellowship by election for his contributions to the advancement of minimally invasive thoracic surgery.
Dr. Cassivi is currently a consultant in the Division of General Thoracic Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he has attained the academic rank of Professor of Surgery. Dr. Cassivi served as Surgical Director of the Lung Transplantation Program at Mayo Clinic from 2004-2012. From 2013 to 2019, Dr. Cassivi served as Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery with responsibilities and oversight of the clinical practice. Dr. Cassivi’s surgical practice spans the spectrum of Thoracic Surgery with a specific emphasis in minimally invasive surgical approaches. As part of his other responsibilities at Mayo Clinic,
Dr. Cassivi has served as Vice Chair of the Mayo Clinic Marketing Committee and since 2015 as t he Medical Director of the Mayo Clinic Division of Brand Strategy and Creative Design. In 2017, Dr. Cassivi became Medical Director of a partnership between Mayo Clinic and Oxford University as these two renowned institutions join together to provide evid ence-based diagnostic and screening services in a state-of-the-art medical facility in London, United Kingdom.
In 1998, Dr. Cassivi was awarded the 1st Annual C. Walton Lillehei Award for research in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery from the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. His current research is in the field of outcomes research with a particular focus on quality measures in surgery and patient safety. Dr. Cassivi is also engaged in clinical research and has served as surgical principal investigator on various studies including the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG) cooperative group trials.
Dr. Cassivi has spoken and made scientific presentations both nationally and internationally on various subjects, including Surgical Quality of Care and Patient Safety, and Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery. He has authored and co-authored over 200 scientific papers and book chapters on a number of medical and surgical topics. Dr. Cassivi was, for five years, the Associate Editor of the Journal of Diseases of the Esophagus, the official journal of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE). He is now a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Thoracic Diseases.
Dr. Cassivi served for six years as a member of the Premier’s Council on Health, Well-Being and Social Justice for the province of Ontario, Canada. He is a past Robert & Mary Stanfield National Scholar in Canadian Bilingual Studies and an A.A. Heaps Canadian National Scholar for contribution to social reform. Dr. Cassivi was awarded the Teacher of the Year Award by the Graduate School of Medical Education at Mayo Clinic and the A.W. Harrison Surgical Teaching Award at the University of Toronto. He has served as a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Education Committee and chair of the
Evarts Graham Fellowship Committee. He has also served as the chair of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Patient Safety Committee. In 2018, Dr. Cassivi gave the Tudor Edwards Memorial Lecturesh ip and named an Honourary Member of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland.
Dr. Cassivi is married to Katherine McLellan. They currently work and reside in Rochester,
Minnesota with their daughter Claire and son Adam.
